Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
