Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
