To the Checkout Assistant That Made Me Completely Without Words – Kudos to You

This occurred on a weekend morning, and I found myself in a foul mood, filling up my mum’s car. It was one of those petrol stations that also functions as a grocery store, so you run the risk of ending up in line customers carrying goods of slightly overpriced groceries. It's an awful situation to happen when the sole aim is to complete a simple refueling. Terrible.

Fourth in line I stood among those waiting. A single person serving, a young woman. Something stood out to her presence. Once the slowpoke at the head of the line had completed payment for a cleaning product, his pastry, and a carton of eggs, I was certain that I heard the cashier bid him a wonderful day. Odd. Perhaps I’d misheard, or perhaps she spoke and was being sarcastic. I pondered if she might actually be a supporter in my battle with dithering, echoing my disdain for people who hold up people just getting gas including me.

Advancing next, now third in line. The next shopper of the queue finished pumping gas with impressive quickness. And there it was again: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” In fact, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. Someone from the US? In Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and hardly anyone here tells people such a cheerful phrase, or simply a good day. Highly unusual. It's uncommon to find people from America visiting this town, and definitely not employed at gas stations or anywhere else.

I was second now. Behind a poor older woman dealing with a protracted effort with her basket, her groceries, her purse and her loyalty card. This took an eternity. Once completed, she as well was wished a wonderful day. Definitely from the US. Confirming it was possible by cracking a joke at the cashier, to observe that response their typical stare, stoically, and state very earnestly: “You are very amusing.” However, nothing occurred of anything hilarious to utter.

Ultimately, I accepted the genuine warmth – or a mimicry of sincerity, that equates to identical in effect – as she gazed me right in the eye, deep into my soul, and bid me a wonderful day. It improved my mood. A positive experience.
