It might not have been at the same level as sparing festive fowl, but the county's top official conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. “This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the beginning of a second term in office. “If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future away from worry.” This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House. The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year. A Future Secured This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement. “The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message. “It embodies the spirit of Miami: vibrant, varied, and based in heritage that bring people together. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.” Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
