Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
