The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team might be building a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable with a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
