European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
