Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials voiced fury after the ex-president accused a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and declared they should be arrested and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.

The Message That Provoked the Dispute

The recorded message, published on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who formerly acted in military or intelligence positions.

"As we did, you all took an vow to safeguard and support this national charter," the officials affirmed in the brief video. "And right now, the dangers to our democratic foundation don't only come from overseas, but from within our own country. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can reject improper directives, you can refuse illegal orders, you have to reject improper directives. No one has to follow directives that break the law or our constitution."

Trump's Furious Response

The clip seemed to trigger a furious reply from the former president.

On the following morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional post, he stated: "This represents really serious, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their words cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Leaders Respond

Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership published a unified declaration denouncing the statements.

"Political violence has no role in America," they wrote. "Representatives who appeared in the video all worked our United States with tremendous national pride and excellence. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and risky death threats against congressional representatives, and appeal to GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."

The opposition officials also said that they had been in communication with protective services "to guarantee the protection of these representatives and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must without delay delete these extreme online messages and withdraw his dangerous discourse before he gets someone killed," the announcement added.

Representatives' Defiant Reaction

The lawmakers who appeared in the video also published a declaration.

"We identify as veterans and security experts who care for this country and swore an pledge to defend and support the national charter of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge is permanent, and we plan to keep it. No threat, coercion, or incitement will stop us from that sacred obligation."

"The significant point is that the ex-president considers it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to repeat the legal requirements," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their support as they carry out their pledge to the founding principles and obligation to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."

They stated: "The entire nation must come together and denounce the president's demands for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a period for principled stance."

More Partisan Comments

The Opposition leader also censured Trump's comments and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is calling for the death of elected officials."

He stated: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. All senators, all representatives, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should censure this without delay and absolutely."

The GOP leader defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This represents very risky, you have important representatives of the government telling soldiers to defy commands, I think that's historic in American history."

The GOP official also reportedly told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to examine the wording and establish all that."

White House Reaction

During a White House press conference on later that day, when asked by a journalist, "Would the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative replied: "No."

"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the spokesperson said. "There are sitting members of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a digital communication to personnel of the US military, to current military personnel advising them to defy the president's legal commands."

She said: "The purity of our defense system rests on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can cause people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and that's what these members of Congress ... are essentially supporting."
