Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers state they were notified late on Wednesday, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then located numerous other vandalized cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state early analysis indicate the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any harm in connection with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to solve the incident" and have requested to the residents for tips.
A senior political figure commented the incident rendered him without words and required to be resolved promptly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, referring to the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
