US air traffic controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid during the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been missing, causing terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated delays caused by climate and other issues.

More than 3,000 American flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy said he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," he remarked in an discussion on a weekend program, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, can I secure another source of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday 22 alerts at airfields said travel would be held up due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest since the closure started.

The American federal closure reached its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest halt in history.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of planes in the air if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead made a personal plea to the professionals.

"I require my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official stated.

On that day, some planes were stopped at LAX due to staffing shortages, causing interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as other flights stretching north to the city of Oakland.

Strain on American aviation contributed to ending a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the halt had entered its fifth week and affected airline operations, including aviator instruction.
